How many of you have a "Hobby Farm"?

We have a hobby farm, and my dream came true when we got it. I was raised on a farm growing up in East TN. I absolutely loved it. I always made it a goal of mine to have another farm when I got older, and I wanted to raise my children on a farm. Unfortunately my children were military brats and raised in different cities until about 4 yrs ago, and now they can't stand my little farm. I love it though, and that is what counts. I have a horse, tons of chickens, chinese red golden pheasants, geese, barn cats we have a good sized garden and I can throughout the summer, and I forage for food when season's allow. Yes everyone around me thinks I am nuts, and they laugh at me but I am happy. We have about 10 acres.

I have only a little over 2.5 acres out in the country....but the chickens started it all....I sell some eggs at work...I got the dog to watch the chickens and the goat to keep the dog company....I have one indoor and one outdoor cat and one barn cat to keep the mice away.oh and guinea to eat ticks and hopefully ants ...I am originally from western NY....and people here say how did a city girl come to Tn and have a farm....I love what i do and would not have it any other way!!!

I'm an urban hobby farmer. We have a regular sized lot with a small house and small front yard but BIG back yard. We have our chooks, and I grow a lot of herbs and vegetables. It's a hobby. Jewelry-making is also a hobby which occasionally brings in a little pocket change from time to time. I only work my job to support my hobbies, though. LOL.

Chickens, Garden, Orchard, berry bushes, Nut trees, and misc plantings on just 5 acres. Got a little diesel tractor for hauling dirt, firewood, bush-hogging, clearing snow, plowing, etc. etc. etc.----so yeah, hobby farm or big garden, whatever.

Mine is a hobby farm. We pretty much give eggs away to friends who shake their heads at the menagerie but hold their hands out willingly for eggs, milk, cheese. LOL. I don't make money but get vast enjoyment from all of my many critters. I do mean MANY critters. My mini dairy goats begin kidding in about 10 days. We will have double the number of goats in a very short time!

I suppose that my place is a "Hobby Farm". It is only 1/2 acre OUTSIDE of Town. I call it "Dottie's Farm" after my late wife.
It's much better than a "retirement-home". I'm sure that I couldn't SURVIVE in an apartment !!! "Dottie's Farm" suits me fine...except I'd like to have a shop/barn....which I may build some day.

I garden....have a "hoophouse" GREENHOUSE that I built from "scrap". I also have a good REAR-TINE tiller that is easy to "farm" with.
I grow different veggies...particularly Tomatoes, HOT Peppers, cucumbers (for pickles) and various other enjoyable veggies. ( I have 5 or 6 Pressure Cookers and a water-bath canner.) Also have 2 seed-starting racks that I built with flourescent bulbs and heating pads.

I've currently got 15 chickens and one "all-around dog" named Crockett, a Boxer, who takes very good care of the place. I'll have MORE chickens this Spring! Gotta build a couple more coops.

It sure does beat watching TV !!! BUT, I tend to get Cabin Fever this time of year when it's only snow, ice, and mud.
I NEED to "work" OUTSIDE !!!

Yep, I reckon it's a Hobby Farm because it sure doesn't "turn-a-PROFIT" !!!

(but, it's only a half-acre...that's ALL I can take care of......OR pay taxes on.)

Never gave any thought as to this being a Hobby Farm.
Just my way of life.

I've never had my chickens dogs or cats lie to me, steal from me, or cheat me.
Never once have they been unfaithful, spread rumors, or stab me in the back.

And that's a whole lot more than I can say for a lot of people I know.

I enjoy the time I spend with these chickens. Peaceful. Lifts my spirit. Makes me happy.
I actually look forward to finding the time to walk in the county with my dog. What an
amazing blessing it is if my wife or daughter walk with us.

As to the garden : Just like the man on "Green Acres", I enjoy the plowing, the planting,
the caring of this land. It's OUR land. And if my garden actually grows...well, wow! Nothing
tastes better than the vegetables out of our garden that WE grew.

I have the nicest little Kubota diesel tractor you ever saw. Keep it all spiffy. Washed, waxed.
Few attachments. All lined up, washed, cleaned. Look like a real farmer. And I enjoy riding that
tractor. Makes me feel like a regular farmer.

15 acres here, house nestled in it's own little valley. A lot of the weather seems to blow right
over. I can walk to the top of the hill and its like I can see forever in the distance. Porch swing
up there so we can watch the world. Yet my home is as private and secluded as it can be. Quiet.

What a way to raise our daugher.

What a wonderful way to live our life.

Call it a hobby farm if you must. But I call it a way of life.

I'm not a city slicker. Country Boy to the core. Got me a country wife, and we done had ourself
a little country girl. Work at home, so I don't have to leave here for days at a time. Sometimes
weeks before I venture off this place. Bored? Not ever. Garage bigger than my house. Two coops.
Her two car garge. Outbuilding to play in, where she stores her stuff.

I've been to the city...me and the wife went a time or two.

Ain't going no more...

I have a hobby farm too on just over 5.5 acres. People at work love to hear the stories about this place. On top of the animals I have a huge veggie garden, grapes, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries.
