OK, just got back from letting the dog clean my coffee cup and breakfast plate. You guys have made a convert.

NOT!

Bus pants are not necessary, and you can't catch anything from the toilet seat - that is unless it happens to be moving.

No way and not because of the germ factor either. Just believe you are creating a bad behavior. How can the dog distinguish between a plate meant for him(or her) and the holiday roast sitting on a plate on the table or counter? If you don't want your dog to fail don't put it in a position to do so. Bad behavior is created by the teacher not the student. Case in point my SIL had a German Shepard who used to chew her shoes, so I asked her what she did about it. She says "well I gave him and old pair that I don't wear anymore", OK. So I asked her how is the dog supposed to know the difference between the shoes in which that is allowed and which ones aren't? Her answer was a blank stare. Also have a friend who's Lab cost him $3000 after it ate a sock. Not because the dog knew but because it wasn't taught not to.

I will never understand why the human race has evolved to be so fearful of germ. Study's have shown that our fear of anything "dirty" has destroyed our immune system. Yet we still wash everything over an over, an no longer let kids be kids. We then inject dead germs in to our selves to give us immunity to things that we would have been immuned to naturally before.

My dogs eat from any plate on the floor an will touch nothing that is not, no matter how easy to reach.

They also have a pare of shoes that are for them to chew on. The do not touch any others...

Perhaps I should have been a little more specific into the type of people to which I were referring to. The average person who most are in over their heads when it comes to dogs and don't often enforce guidelines for them. Can't tell you how many times I have heard people say my dog did this or that or seen people tell the dog "NO" and the dog continues to do it and owner just lets it happen and doesn't correct it. It is not a one size fits all opinion just my general consensus from observation. People who have been around dogs most of their life an advantage over those who haven't. Some people just don't mind the things dogs do no matter how long they have been around them. Every dog is different as well both from genetics and training.

I assume you have been around dogs for most of your life and your dogs know the ground rules set by you. Quite often people will comment on how well behaved my dogs are. I guess I just have a high expectations whether the dog is home or in the field. Because an unruly dog in the field can turn a good day of hunting into a bad day really quick.

You got that right Reb. I worked in the waste industry for 25 years, granted I wore gloves but washing your hands before you grabbed a sandwich wasn't always an option and hardly was ever sick.Maybe called in sick 5/6 times over that period. Work in a grocery store meat dept part time now and sometimes forget to was up before grabbing something to eat. Probably grosses some people out. Remember being a kid and my mother would defrost a chicken on the counter for dinner which is taboo these days. Your body has a hard time fighting something it has never seen before.

I think most dog issue come from seeing something as cute when they are a puppy that they don't want them to do as an adult. They let it go till it is to late.

Yes I have been around dogs for a while an have rep for having well behaved, house trained puppies by 8 weeks old.
