A friend of mine told me a funny story about doing this. They had new neigbors that started stopping in each day - just in time for dinner so, my friends invited them stay for dinner to be polite . After this went on for several weeks and the people never extended a invite to return the favor, my friends started feeling a bit put-out.

My friends came up with a plan: So after dinner while they were still visiting with these neighbors - my friends wife set the plates down on the floor - for their dogs to lick clean and then she put them straight into the cabinet.

When the neighbors questioned her, she said "oh the dogs do such a great job and it saves me the work !" lol Needless to say the neighbors stopped showing up for dinner and if invited to stay - they would say "Thanks but, we have to get going" LOL

When I was on shipboard in the Navy we had a guy in the division who was a germ freak. He always had to have a top bunk lest germs from the man above him should fall down on his bunk, and if you went over to talk to him and made the mistake of resting your elbow on his bunk he went nuts. The best part was watching him prepare to take a shower. That evolution required three, count 'um THREE! pairs of flip-flops (In those days the navy called them "shoes, shower, vinyl" and issued you one pair.) Anyway, here was his routine:

1. The first pair he wore from his bunk to the doorway to the head. ("Head" is navy nomenclature for the restroom)
2. At the door he'd toss the second pair onto the floor and step into them. He would than turn around and pickup pair number one.
3. Walk to the shower.
4. Throw pair number three into the shower and step into them. Pick up pair two.
5. Shower.
6. Reverse the process to get back to his bunk.

One always had to wonder how he felt about taking his dinner tray from a stack and picking up his utensils out of a bin not to mention eating at someplace that someone else had just gotten up from. He had about ten times the number of uniforms as anyone else, because he wouldn't send them to the ship's laundry.

Since, in those days the U.S. Navy was all volunteer, one has to wonder. Course there was also the fellow who joined up and was deathly afraid of water above his knees.

Why would someone like that sign up to be in a box for months with that many other people?


Grandfather was in the navy. Based in Cicily in the early 1940s. Base guard I think from a few comments but he never actually talked about the war.

FIL was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and spent the last part of the war as a German POW - and that's about all he would ever say about it, too (though he was a huge fan of Hogan's Heros!)

Okay here's a joke a guy comes into his dads house after his mom just died. So their setting the table for diner and the guy says hey dad the dishes don't look that clean. Dad: best could water can do. Son: okay. So they eat diner, and when their finished the dad starts yelling cold water!! Then a dog comes in and starts liking the plates

As a kid, I use to lick an ice cream cone, hand it to the dog to lick, and continue back and forth until it was gone. My mama says I use to gnaw on dog biscuits from time to time, too. We now have three cats, and although they have their own plates, they are allowed to clean up ours as they choose. And yes, I love big 'ol dog kisses, too.

I'd forgotten about Sammy, a rescue Lab/Rottweiler mix (ie. mutt) who had a really neat trick. Both OldGal and I wear eyeglasses. Sammy would jump up and, without touching any other part of us lick our glasses. He only did it to the two of us. R.I.P. Sammy.

That's a P-38; it's military issue. When my older brother was in basic training, the first time they were issued c-rations, the clods in charge thought it funny to give the guys the cans and the openers and not tell them how to use them. My brother had known how to use one for years, so he spoiled their fun by showing the others in his unit.

Ha. When I got married in 78 to a Navy man, he gave me one and I have used it ever since then. I had to get a spare because the cat would steal it sometimes.
