I got 13 for the past two orders, one lot of RIR roosters and one lot of Barred Rock roosters. I gave away the RIRs and figured i'd free range the Barred Rocks; I may as well have given them away to the coyotes, they got all of them. This year's order should arrive tomorrow, so i'll let you know!

I LOVE packing peanuts! They're usually deeeelicious!

Last year I got the extras from other people's chick orders, grew out some free SLW & RIR roos for the table. But you can request no extras if you really don't want them.

Ok, the grand total is:

9 Barred Rock roosters
1 extra Leghorn pullet
1 extra mystery chick!

I had a lucky save with the mystery chick. I met the mail lady at the mailbox as it's about 12 miles from our house. I opened it and I had what I thought was a dead one. I scooped it up and its leg moved a little, so I got them all in the truck quickly and held him in front of the heater vent all the way back to the house. By the time I got home his eyes were open and he was standing up and cheeping! I gave him a little Bounce Back in warm water, put him under the lamp and now he looks just as well as the others!

I almost lost another one, i'd counted everyone out the box and didn't notice an extra hiding under the bedding where it had folded over. She's fine too now

Do you mean that if the hatchery insists on adding peanuts for warmth but you decline them, and then if any of the chicks you order die in transit, they won't give you a refund because you didn't take their advice? I thought that was the reason for the 25-chick minimum, that number should be sufficient to keep everyone warm & protected for the journey. If you're ordering that many you shouldn't need peanuts, and if someone doesn't make the journey you should be given a refund. I think they add peanuts if you order in increments less than 25, say if you ordered only 40 they would add 10 peanuts to fill up the box. Talk to the customer service at your hatchery & see what they say.

If you don't want to keep your peanuts you can give them away or sell them. That's how I got a dozen SLW roos last year, someone was offering them on FreeCycle. I raised them up for the table and even managed to sell one too. I'm impressed with the folks who got pullet chicks as peanuts, I thought they only gave away cockerels.

No that's not the case at all.

Ideal have a $25 order minimum not a 25 chick minimum. If you decline extra roosters, they ask that you purchase insurance for a small fee which will cover against losses. If you do take the roosters and lose some of your order (not the extras), they will refund the cost of the chicks lost. They guarantee 100% live chicks on arrival.
