How many snakes around the farm are too many?

Snakes are good for rodent control around the farm and IMHO, you cannot have too many. However, it depends on what specie of snake you are talking about & what kind of chickens you have (Bantams/Seramas vs. Large Std Fowl).

For me it depends on what kind of snake and how close to my house and coops he is. A rattlesnake in my yard is dead but a non poisonous snake just passing through gets a free pass as long as he isn't in the coop.

Yesterday I went out to feed and water started with the ducks and was just letting them out to free range when I realized the buzzing I was hearing was not a cicada but a lovely rattlesnake I closed the run door to keep ducks in and went and got the gun I will never allow a rattler live in my yard!

I don't mind a few garter snakes myself but with a small child, I'm not thrilled about having hognose snakes or rattlers around. Although, since I've been letting my chickens in the yard in the evening we haven't seen any snakes and only a few toads.

If you're worried about snakes, get a few guineas

Zero sounds about right to me.

I am so afraid of snakes. I very deep fear. My father was bitten by a copperhead and loss complete use of his finger. It damaged the nerves and he can't even straighten the finger out now.

No matter what kind of snake that I see, I want someone to kill it!! I won't only because I'm too afraid to get close to them. I'm afraid they will jump and bite me. If I try to kill one with a hoe, I might miss, or not hit it hard enough, and it will bite me. I ran over one with the lawn mower the other day, and it didn't kill it! The darn thing crawled out of the area the grass comes out of. I put that thing in the fastest speed, and zoomed to DH! I jumped off the mower, and flew into the house. He didn't find the snake to kill it.

However, day before yesterday, I was looking for eggs in the window wells, and the yard, and there was a snake in a window well!!! Luckily my son hadn't left for work yet, and he killed it. Whew!

A bull snake (male) can jump pretty high and bite you. I was mowing in the back of our property last year...a copperhead jumped out at me, but, fortunately, missed me and hit the lawn tractor instead. He was about a 5 to 6 footer. I was very lucky as he was very quick. I hate snakes and will kill any that I see.
