How many times a day do you turn?

There's nothing wrong with laying your eggs flat!

Are you asking? You're smiley seems unsure, but otherwise I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with it. I have great hatches that way.

Absolutely nothing wrong with laying your eggs flat, I use an egg carton for some that I hand turn just because it's quicker/easier to tilt the carton from one side to the other.

Well, guess I haven't done to much wrong. One is completely out of the shell and flapping around in there. Two more eggs are chipped enough that I can see movement in there and another is starting. That leaves three eggs not doing anything. I really wanted the one white egg (silver Campine) to hatch but so far it is just the RIR's that are cracking. Time will tell. T
OH, one more question.
The one chick that has hatched, there is a withered up yellow stuff that looks like the yolk. It was attached to the chick but with all the flopping around it did the yellow isn't attached anymore. Is this something that should have stayed attached or is it alright and will live without the yolk thing. She was panting rather hard there for awhile but now will sleep a few and then move around and sleep more and move around. IT is chirping and has the other two still in the shell doing it to. THANKS for the help.

I have auto turners in my bators but right now the turners are full. I've got 4 goose eggs I'm hand-turning because they won't fit in a turner and 18 button eggs that I'm also hand-turning because I don't have space in the turner. I know I turned them once today and I think once yesterday....

The reason I have auto turners is because I just cannot remember to turn the eggs! My dad told people it was because I didn't make a good mother-hen

It's fine as long as she's not bleeding. It could have been some 'egg slime' that just didn't stay in the egg.

I've hand turned my eggs several ways and numbers of times and what I've liked the best was to take egg cartons and cut the tops off and put the eggs in those and I can turn them as little as once a day and still have good results I think they heat a little more evenly but that's just my guess. When I laid them flat I needed to turn them 3 times a day to avoid problems and I always had them roll around a lot.

Thanks for the input gang! You have really helped my confidence! I was sort of surprised to hear how many of you have successful hatches turning as little as once or twice a day. I have been turning about 5 times so far, partly cause I am really enjoying my first hatch. I usually get up once during the night to go to the rest room, so I have turned them during the night each night, but it's good to know that isn't all that necessary.

I've hand turned for the great majority of my time incubating eggs. I usually like to turn 5 times a day, 180 degrees, eggs marked with an X and an O. It always worked well for me. I feel that laying on their sides is the most natural way of incubating eggs, so I am most comfortable with it, but I've used cartons with eggs with detached air cells with success. I then turned them the way an auto-turner such as those found in Hovabators turns eggs, also with success. Either way works, it's hard to say which is better. 3x a day some say is enough but I like 5x.
