How Many Times DO I Need To Change Their Litter?

Hey lazy Gardener ,
I figured out a new way to get the water up out of the chips .are you ready for this ?okay, I buy water spring water in one gallon jugs for $0.88 at Walmart . then I take the jug and cut it off around the bottom just below the bottom of the handle . then I took some sticky tape and made a star of tape on the bottom of the gallon jug. put the filled waterer on top of the gallon jug .the bottom of the gallon jug lifts the waterer in my Brooder so it's about half an inch above the top of the British. when I snap the top of the brooder, it pushes down on top of the waterer and they can't kick the waterer over.
next season I'll take the jug bottom and fill with plaster of Paris. I think that would be helpful. it makes the jug bottom a little bit more sturdy .
Best,
Karen
Can you please post a picture????

Hi JB,
it's just an upside-down empty one gallon plastic water jug cut in half. .with 3 strips of sticky tape criss-crossed across the bottom of the bottom 1/2 of the jug. Throw the top away.. the waterer sits on top of it .that's all. it's easy to do.

i just started using one of those hamster waterfeeders. The chicks learned quickly how to use it. It already doing a great job. before, the chicks would always knock over the water bowl, step in it and get shaving all soggy quickly. I would have to refill it at least 5 times a day. The feeder is great. I also bought a rabbit food bowl thats propped up. Great too.

my next question: should i keep putting food in their bowl if there is food all over the bottom? The keep doing what the cats do after they pee in the litter and knock the food out of the bowl.

I have found that when they are little and on starter they won't work too hard to eat. Just keep filling the feeder. You can try putting something under it to catch the food but they won't dig through shavings to find it. As soon as they are larger I switch to pellets from the crumble. They waste a lot less of it.

So my chicks are 5 weeks old today. I got two bales of pine shavings when I ordered the chicks, and put one full bale into the kiddie pool they call home currently. Every couple of days I mix it around so the poo, dropped food and wet shavings aren't in one spot for too long.
So far it's been great! no smells really to speak of, no wet feet. They do get poo on their feet occasionally but it comes off easily.
