HOW MUCH "DAILY FEED" IS TOO MUCH FEED??

Do they not eat food off the ground? I read that some of you are careful not to waste food. I would have thought the chooks would clean up the spill as well.

They do clean up most of the feed, but there is always some that gets lost in the litter or ground. Depending on how much they scratch around it can add up. Especially the finer bits.

Wouldn't it be great if we could figure out a way for NO waste? We buy 5 bags of layer pellets, 1 bag of scratch, and 22 lbs of seeds each week. We are currently feeding..
Roughly

95 chickens
28 ducks
6 Turkeys
2 Geese
They also eat a large amount of scraps due to my job providing a lot of wasted food including fresh fruits, veggies and some breads.
If you divide the lbs of feed by the number of birds they would each get almost a half lb a day of food.(some of course are bantams and require less, obviously the geese and turkeys require more...) but you get the idea....

Because they run to me like they are STARVING every time I go out,I always worry if they are getting enough...but they must be because lots of days when I throw treats, they cannot finish it all right away, and they feel they can be choosy as well and pick their favorites out first.
I am really interested in this thread because I want to feed enough but not so much they are all fat!

To the OP: Good thread
