We haven't suffered the price hike yet, except on the black rooster which is a 7 grain feed. I imagine it's the BOSS in it that is responsible for the price hike. It went from $10.50 for 50# in the spring to $14.50 now.
My chickens free range all day but with the drought and the record temps. we've had this summer they would have starved if I didn't feed them (and egg production would have dropped). There's nothing to eat out there right now except grasshoppers. The farmers are having to not only feed their cattle this summer, something almost unheard of, they are having to bring in water for them too. The huge hay barn at the other end of our farm, usually filled to capacity by this late in the summer by our leasee, is nearly empty. With only one cutting of the meadows compared to the four or five they usually get there will be no hay for the cattle this winter. Alot of folks are severely downsizing their herds. You'd think the price of beef would drop with all the cattle flooding the market, but nope. The middleman is getting a bigger share.
thanks for the update....what a hardship this summer has been in your part of the country, well, all around the country. It seems that there are a lucky few that have had a 'normal' summer. I hope it rains soon down there for all you folks.
