Hi!

Ok, I have a great way to scoop the poop...I use a kitty litter scoop. It filters out the sand and most of the wood shavings - it's awesome. I fill-up our paint bucket then dump ii in our empty garden bed for my hubby to use. He usually fertilizes 1x week and he just mixes it directly into the soil. Our tomatoes are getting BIG!

- We only have 3 chickens, so he doesn't add lye.

I'm a bit OCD and I pick-up the poop daily mainly because our dogs like to go into the pen and we like to hold the chickens (there is nothing grosser than placing your chicken in your lap with icky poop on their foot)! Anyway, the chickens don't smell nor does their coop/pen - or our dogs!

That's my 2 cents.

Thanks,

No, it is too "hot," and will burn the plants. Needs to be composted.

Some folks clean out the poop when gardening season is over and spread/till it into the garden. All set next spring. Or just compost the litter and poop.

Our family ran a dairy for many years. Compared to 100 dairy cows, chicken poop ain't nothin'.

We also raised chickens and our milk route customers could order dressed chickens and eggs. We had to chicken houses and typically had 200 to 300 Rhode Island Reds all the time. That's a whole 'nuther story that I should post on BYC somewhere.
