Hi all, I thought an interesting post would be how much $ a person would need to get started and maintain a healthy flock. I have 24 Easter Egg Chickens.
Here is what I've spent thus far...
Coop Construction and Run - $725 approximately
Brooder - $65
Font - Feed Bin - $40
Monthly Feed/Treats and Litter costs - $70
Medicine/Vitamins - $30
25 Day old Baby Chicks - $60
Look on daughters face after seeing the first egg laid...
PRICELESS!!

Sorry couldn't resist the play on the credit card commercial...luckily I paid CASH for all my chicken stuff!
Total Cost - $990
Total Monthly Cost From Here on Out- $70
Still think its cheaper than 1 dog if you look at it...PLUS these pets give back!

Love it!

One thing I did to "justify" the cost of building my coop... I designed it based on a storage shed, so if I decide that I don't want to do chickens anymore, I have a nice size storage shed already in place.

we only have 9 chickens and one rooster and we have two peacocks and two dashuands dogs.

dog kennel (we have used it once for a injured chicken 8x9) $199.00

chicken coop $166.00 (a little lumber left over from other projects)

chicken pen and run $265.00 18X25

hinges and latches (free)

wire to cover our windows on the coop (free)

tin for the roof (free)

paint and brush and roller $ 25.00

three nesting boxes (free)

purchased nesting box $5.44

feed for chickens $ 7.87 for 50 lb

feed for peacocks $ 4.99 for 50 lb

light for peacocks $ 14.99

i think that is about it

i do like being able to put the free things on here.

forgot to put the cost of chickens $6o for 9 chickens the guy threw in the rooster for free! (chickens were about 4-5 months old when we bought them)

two peacocks $ 60 at four weeks old.

Me too! I am splitting mine in the middle to have a garden shed/chicken coop.

Costs:

$70 brooder, light and light bulbs
$600 (so far) on the coop - still need siding, roofing and insulation perhaps
$40 in feed/litter per month
$111.25 in chickens
$40 in water jugs/feeders

This isn't including the materials I got for free. I got the flooring for the 10x12 coop and the wood for the brooder for free.
