How much do you charge for eggs?

I try to sell them for $2 a dozen but these rednecks around here say its too high so I'm gonna have to drop it a little to move some. I'm currently sitting on 29 doz. and need to buy feed this week. I was getting $2 a doz. in south La. for the past two years but since I've moved back here to the old home place it seems the people around here just think your ripping off their right arm or something when you ask that for the price.

So, I'm gonna try something a little different I'll drop the price to $1.50 a doz. but instead of giving them all large and extra large eggs I'll put about 8 normal eggs and 4 med./small game banty type eggs and see how that does for them. Might work people are funny about their money, maybe the drop in price will sale and the size won't matter so much. Anyway I'm gonna try it might not work if it doesn't well I'll try something else.

I don't always sell my eggs but when I do, I charge $1.50 for small, $2.50 for medium, and $3.50 for large, and the large green I get $2.50 a half dozen! Unfortunately, the cartons cost me over $ .50 a piece and I don't seem to get back many empties, so this doesn't make much of a dent in my expenses, but it helps.

I do weigh all the eggs so I am sure of the size. I'm into baking and I know most recipes call for large eggs, so I think it's possible that my customers would like to know the size they're buying--I know I would.

I sell certified organic eggs to our co-op where I get $1.82 for medium through jumbo eggs. They are picked up weekly and taken to an egg processing plant where they are sanitized, graded, and put in cartons. They are sold throughout the midwest under one of the big national labels for about $4.50 a dozen. I get a number of super-jumbo eggs that I can't ship so I buy super-jumbo egg cartons and sell those off the farm for $2.00 a dozen. (The cartons cost me $0.25 so I'm making $1.75 on the eggs). Folks around here won't pay any more. Although I have a few customers who are interested in organic eggs, most just want eggs and realize that they can buy them at the corner gas station for $0.89 a dozen. They are willing to pay a bit more for super-jumbo, farm fresh eggs, but not too much more...

Do you raise purebreds? If so and you sell your eggs then there is that possiblity that someone will incubate them and hatch out purebred chicks...for 2 dollars a dozen.

How do you prevent this. Does everyone have a mixed flock? There have been several posts on buying store eggs and incubating.

I sell my eggs for $3 for a half a dozen and $5 or $6 for a dozen. I have a mixed flock of Marans and pure ameraucana so the people enjoy the egg color around me. Its also diffrent because I live in the suburbs and people are willing to pay more. I am also going to start selling pure good quality black and blue ameraucana eggs for $30-$40 dollars a dozen and Olive eggers eggs for $40.

I'm not selling yet, but the going rate here in maui for a dozen eggs is $7, sometimes $5.

We are selling ours for 2.50 a dozen. That seems to be the going rate here. We live in a rural county and we have lots of neighbors with chickens as well. We just sell a few dozen to our co-workers to offset the price of chicken feed. We are keeping the "egg money" in a jar to go towards their feed so we get a feel for how much they are costing us. We have 17 hens and one roo. Got 11 eggs today! Ours are not "organic" as we feed Purina Layena. They sure are yummy though.

I live in Australia too and at the supermarket in my area it costs
$4.50 - $5.50 for a dozen cage eggs
or $5.50 - $7- for 10 barn eggs.

Though a bag of organic feed costs me $40 + $10 for shipping
so I guess it all comes out in the wash.


PS Newbie question - what are "roos"? I am assuming you don't all mean kangaroos, which are the roos in my area
