My neighbors keep asking me when I am getting my chickens butchered. They want to buy some. Not sure what to charge.

You might check your local grocery to see what they charge for fresh birds in the butchers case--you know, where the fancy meat is. That might give you some idea of what the local market can bear. You might also try butchering a few and offering them at "1/2 price" or some "introductory price". Let us know how you decide.

At the stores here "organic free range chicken" is $5-7 a lb. Some overpriced chicken I would say! I sell my birds with head and skin off for $2 a lb. $3 a lb would be fair to make a profit, I break even. This is a cornish cross right? Else they are soup birds and not good to eat.

$3 a pound is what I sell roasters for. I just have a sense that people won't pay (much) over $20 for a bird they envision being one meal. I charge $3.50 per pound for smaller fryer sizes, 4 lbs and under.

Our local organic market sells them for $3.50 per lb. We sell ours for $2.50 per lb. or about $15 for a 6 lb bird. I am referring to the cornish cross type. Old roosters and such are not as worthy IMO, as they don't hold the same flavor or texture as a fast maturing roaster.

Thanks. I was thinking somewhere around $10 per bird. I think I will try the heres a bird and try it first. But I have to say I will be the 1st to try it.
Our friend had a few birds some time back and Ic an remember I would chew the meat and chew and chew. It was like rubber. I hope and pray mine isnt like that.
