How much do you pay a chicken sitter?

I have a college girl come and live, out our house when were gone, and she takes very good caare of horses, dogs and chickens, I try to pay her $20 a day, but she always turns me down.

I have a bonded, insured pet caretaker who charges $35 a day. She's dependable and it's well worth it to me because of the peace of mind she provides. I hate to leave my animals!

Gosh, you are getting off cheap! I guess it depends on how many times you want your daughter to feed the chickens, but I had to bribe her...and it was going to a good cause....(supporting her BF

I have a bonded pet sitter stop by for a two hour visit for $35. In that time she feeds the dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, and goats. She scoops the cat box and plays with the dogs if there's anytime left over. When I'm gone longer she has a 7pm - 7am option and she sleeps over. It's lot more expensive, but I think the dogs especially appreciate it.

We paid some of our close friends to house sit for us. We were gone 4 days I think and we gave them $150. The lived here when they were not at work or in class and looked after 2 pens of chickens, 2 rabbit hutches (containing an injured hen each) 2 cats, 2 lab mixes and a fish. Plus garden watering. When I lay it all out like that is seems like a lot of work! Of course the chicken pens they just had to peek in to make sure the food and water were not empty, so they were easy. Mostly it was company for the dogs and garden watering we needed. And the security of having somebody there just in case.

My sitter charges $19 per visit. I think what you pay depends on where you live - cost of living is different in different areas of course. But within reason, it's worth the peace of mind regardless - if you're getting someone who is insured, has good references, is experienced and reliable. Just knowing that someone will be keeping an eye on my house is great - I know the paper and mail are taken in, lights go on and off, as well as the animals being cared for - it looks like there's someone there, not an empty house. Plus if anything happens during my trip that keeps me from getting home on time, all I have to do is call and things continue to get taken care of. Well worth the price!

I have been on a local permaculture site in the Phoenix metro area where I live (west Mesa AZ) and the people who have chickens are trying to set up a swap (you look out for mine and I'll look after yours next time) but most want to go the same holiday weekend.

Maybe I'll go help a few out nearby me for the eggs since mine will not start laying for a couple months probably (just got them this month- ranging from about 14-18 weeks old). Hopefully I will find someone to look after mine if I go. I usually stick around town anyway.

I just asked a chicken sitter who is in my neighborhood and she wants $25/day. On one hand, this is high because I really just need her to do a look-see and close any non-automated doors and make sure the automated ones worked. On the other hand, she needs to come by after 8:30PM on a weekend because I need her to come after they roost so she doesn't have to do any wrangling. I'll keep food and water full. I offered her $20+ eggs. It's pricey, but it's for my birthday and I want to not worry about the chickens while I am not here.
