it does not make sense to increase your flock size at those cheap prices.. you are losing money on eggs and you will just compound your losses .. do a cost study..
Actually, I was talking to the Amish fellow I got more chickens off yesterday (he has a big flock of Golden Comets that he sells eggs from) and I asked him how much he sells for.
He said $1.50 a dozen, which is what I had planned to raise mine to.
No, I am not breaking even, but the money earned does pay for feed (I'm still in the hole from coops, chickens, etc... will probably never break even on all that I have invested
)
But it isn't a business - it's just mainly for fun, and if the money I get from eggs will buy enough feed for them, then I'm happy. Like I said, I tried giving them away, and no one wanted free eggs,
They're happy to pay for them, though.
I live in the middle of no-where, so I couldn't sell for what folks living near cities or in other parts of the country make off their eggs. People here would just laugh and drive right by if I posted those prices. If folks can get that much, more power to them, but here, it isn't practical to even ask that high a price.
If I asked for 4 bucks a dozen, I wouldn't sell any, and that wouldn't be cost effective, either.
