A 50# bag of Modesto Milling Organic Layer Pellets lasts about 6 weeks and costs $35 in Berkeley. BOSS, Oyster shell, scratch & grit add up to about $8/mo. TOTAL FOOD COSTS: $31/mo. for 7 Chickens. They get to free range about an hour/day, and get some of scraps from the garden. I'm getting about 2 eggs / day through the winter. 4-5 per day during the spring/summer/fall.
In exchange for the eggs, I promised all my original girls they could stay forever. That won't be very good for egg production in a few years; I should really think it through before I make promises like that.

I hate to admit this, but I am not a thrifty chicken farmer.
