How much food do my chickens need need?

They need from 75 grams to 120grams depending on live body weight.
This varies with egg laying cycle.
Depending on your keeping arrangements this can vary with forage availability.
It is not always advisable to leave feed down. I supervise the feeds for the chickens here; they free range. It takes a good fifteen minutes to make sure all the chickens get fed properly. The pullets and cockerels get to eat when the seniors have finished.
I feed twice a day unless it's been very dry during the spring and summer months and three times a day during the winter.

Hello KZN I'm also in KZN. I have Lohmann hens. They get aprox 100g of pellets per hen per day plus a generous selection of weeds,chard,sunflower heads,cabbage leaves,radishes and whatever else I have growing in my garden for them. My Bantams get slightly less.

Yes they are. They're the size of commercial layer hens. I don't leave food out all day otherwise they waste it and then we get rats and genets visiting

I’m going to my local my local farm shop tomorrow so I’ll buy a tube feeder hopefully that’ll work fine.

The half shed I’ve got that provides shelter for them has got a lot of rats but I think if I get a tube feeder they hopefully won’t be a problem. Where did you get your lohmann hens from?
