how much hardware cloth for run

Thanks. I found it on chewy I think it was for around $130 on sale! I was so excited so scooped it up. I did get the 50' from amazon since the were the cheapest for that size.

Glad I will have a bit of extra since I will have the eves to do, and windows etc. I do have a 2'x25' roll here and some that I will take off the crate once they are ready to move out that I can use as well.

I just realized I wasn't paying close enough attention...talking about 150' not 100' I need to get it together...

We're making a 12x12x7 run (with shed style metal roof above the HWC covered top)
I haven't decided whether to do an apron, or dig down and insert the HWC straight down from the foundation and back fill with 3/4- tamped down. Think the 3/4' might help with drainage, but I don't think that's a problem.

The apron would be the easiest I think, but would have to bury it well because I don't want to trip on it.

In addition to the covered run, I want to make a "Pullet" Portable free-range thingy - using PVC and the HWC and light enough for me to move it easily. I want them to "free range" where it's where I want! LOL...in the fall after the veggies are down, they can free range to their pea-picken heart's delight

I am no expert at all obviously since I haven't even built mine yet. LOL But in my research I read that the apron seems to work the best. Most just use lawn stakes (shoot now can't think of if that is what they are called) to stake it down then the lawn grows over it and people move over it etc. There are a few threads in here with pictures. I think @aart has them saved. I may have saved one and will look in a few to see if I have it.

No, I thought yous guys was talking about not being able to find 100', not that you couldn't find 150' online. Me either, as it turns out.

Also, I think it looks like (according to the photos here) that perhaps I won't need 4 4x4s per side for the run. Just use 3/side and run the HWC around the run in 2 layers and the top.


I'm fairly certain using 1x4s to further secure the HWC will be a tad less expensive than buying 12 8' 4x4s. I dunno. I'm poop-ti-pated.

glad I could help again. LOL We are just starting our build this weekend for the coop then still have the run to build. I know I have so many run and coop ideas since I can't find exactly what I want. Then many plans I found for the coop don't show enough ventilation so I have links saved for what that should be like etc. My husband is the one building (with my help) but I am the one researching and then he keeps telling me he is "confused" and unsure of how to do blah blah........... so I show my plans, show other pictures etc. but don't think he still gets it. Good thing he is handy and can figure things out. haahaa. But I know researching coops and runs can sure make your head spin!!!!!!!! We decided the end of last summer to get chicks so I figured we would wait till this year so I could research and we could get things ready... So I have been researching, planning and looking for about 8 mo now. We have the space all set (had to tear down a shed that was starting to rot that was in the area we were using). I marked off the space for the coop and run today so we had an idea of that and got that all cleared out of anything that may hurt them. Wood is coming on Friday, chicks coming tomorrow and start building on Sat!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with your build. If you have coop or run questions from what I have seen (and has helped me a TON) aart is a good one to give advice.

Same with my guy - only he's a whiz on computers, but hammer, nails and plans? Not so much.

I had a fun idea looking at one of the ideas: put a couple of blocks down for the hens to hop up onto and hang a mirror so they can look at themselves. Have purpose for the destination. Could probably try that with food treats too. Don't want to make it TOO easy for them!

Oh..I agree with you - I'm suspicious about the ventilation in the OverEZ coop we're getting, but the windows could remain open. I love the coops with about 4-6" open between the top of the coop and the roof (covered with hardware cloth, of course!)
