How much is horse hay in your area? Both sq. bale and rounds.

Wow, I am about 1 hour north of Philadelphia, PA. I pay anywhere from $4-$6.50 for an average 40lbs bale of Timothy hay. Love to know where these other eastern PA folks get their hay and what kind it is. We are about 2 weeks away from needing to refill the loft!!!

Wow!! Here in drought stricken east Texas, square bales of grass hay is $11-$15 and round bales are $90-$150. Ouch! And most if not all of that has been trucked in from other states.

Wow! I'm glad I'm not in TX or CA! Here in VT, we are paying $4.25/bale for square bales of 2nd cut grass hay.

I paid $3.00 a bale for orchard grass mix hay, alfalfa was $3.75 and round bales I don't know. I have my hay put up in round bales and pay the farmer what ends up to be around $23 per round bale and this is my own hay.
At this time of year, hay is up to $7 a bale for grass hay at the local auction last week.
Last year wasn't that good for the hay crops here as we had a wet spring, then really dry summer. But I'm not complaining. I really feel bad for you guys that have to pay so much for hay. I don't know how you do it.

Wow! That seems high for your own hay. Does he net wrap it? I split 50/50 for my own hay...meaning...they come in and cut, rake and bale it...at their expense and leave half of it in the drive in front of the barn. This year they offered to wrap the rounds in plastic for $5 per round. I declined because my rounds are stored inside of the barn.
I often wondered why more beef cattle isn't raised in Ohio instead of out west. The hay and grazing is more plentiful here. Someone told me it's because there isn't enough grazing land for the big producers.
We have tons of dairy farms. Most farmers don't graze their milkers though. It's more cost effecient to hay their pastures and keep the cows indoors.

Just outside Dayton, Ohio here - I'm paying between $4 - $6/bale...about $40 and up for a round bale. My neighbor, who just moved here from northern Ohio, goes back up there to get hay for about $3/bale. He's going to get some for me next time! I really hope they can cut early this year, and the prices go down a bit. I'm feeding three horses, and I'm glad my boarders supply their own hay and grain!

I'm in middle Ca (valley springs) we are paying $17.00-$20.00 a bale for alfalfa/grass mix. The bales are between 90-100 lbs. This is the most I have ever paid, and we can not find oat or just grass hay.

I wanted to mention that one of the reasons alfalfa has gone so high is that alfalfa growers who live somewhat near the ocean can ship it to China and make much more money. Ugh!!!!

I am in the U.P. of Michigan and I am paying $2 per 50# square bale of grass hay with some alfalfa. And for round bales I pay $20 for 4X4 bales that weigh approx. 800#, $25 for 4X5 bales 900-1000# and 6X6 1200#+ are $30 a bale. I am stuck now with the 4X4 though because both of my usual suppliers are running low. I have 7 horses and 2 cows going through about 2 bales a week, when I feed squares I feed 3 in the am and 3 in the pm. They mostly just eat hay my rescues get grained but my healthy horses who are too fat anyway get a cup a grain just so they think they are getting something lol
