How much is horse hay in your area? Both sq. bale and rounds.

4X4 round bale 800-900#- $25

square bales last year $3.50

Good clean grass hay delivered to my barn or field.

Yeah, IF you can even find any!!! Haven't seen a bale of Coastal I think in over 2 yrs now, at least around here. I can't believe we are paying more now for bahai and mixed grass than we were paying for Coastal just several years ago! I've been forced to feed a lot of "Only One" the last couple years when I couldn't find hay anywhere...talk about expensive! I can't use round bales, I just don't have a way to handle them, and without a protection ring, a horse just tears it up and tramples most of it. And my grass in my pasture never even started growing last spring, I didn't even have any grass to mow in my YARD, just weeds..that's a first for me up here, in 40 yrs!

Wow!! Here in drought stricken east Texas, square bales of grass hay is $11-$15 and round bales are $90-$150. Ouch! And most if not all of that has been trucked in from other states.

I'm in NW Arizona. Alfalfa hay bales weighing 110-125 are at $18.00 each. DH bought a truck load in July and it cost $15.00 for 110-125 lb bales. Prices are not expected to go down this spring.

I feed the rounds, have them put in the barn sitting on the ends. When I open one I peel flakes off of it to feed. It is a little more work, but I am saving on my feed bill and the horses are not wasting it. A 800+ lb roll will last me between 8-10 days for 6 horses. Horses weigh between 850-1100 lbs.

I only have one horse, and no barn space to put one in, but that would be a good idea if I did. She has her snug little stall on the back side of the storage shed, but no room to put a roll. I had 2 other horses here one winter some years ago, got a roll set uout there, they tore it up and trampled most of it within a few days.
But around here, on top of price for a roll, to have anyone deliver a roll, if you can find someone that will deliver 1 roll, the charge is outrageous. Thank God we've been having rains, at least the grass will grow this spring!
Actually, after 18 yrs (she's now 20) here with me, she will be "rehoming" with one of my daughters in the next few weeks, who is working on a fence, with a fresh pasture not stripped by grazing like mine during these drought years, for her foster children to enjoy. My health hasn't let me ride in a few years now. I'm not even strong enough to get her saddled anymore, let alone get up on her. But she loves being ridden, and has always been fascinated with little children. Win-win all around.

What a horse can do to a round bale without a protector ring....

We only buy squares but a grass mix is 4$ a bale, we are fortunate to have a local source and it's locally grown on his fields.
