My chicks pretty much go for starter, then they'll have a little more starter, and for dessert - there's starter. Lettuce seems to be welcome but I almost "ruin" their interest in eating lettuce as adults by giving it to them as chicks.
It isn't until they are about 8 weeks old that they start getting adventuresome in sampling new food. But, they are youngsters, growing fast, and full of energy. If you scroll down that University of Missouri webpage to Table 3 you'll see Leghorn-type size and feed requirements. Notice that they are eating more than half their weight in feed each week. As they grow up, their feed to body weight ratio will not look quite like it does now - even when they begin to lay.
