Aloha,

I am feeding my 6 hens fresh sprouts; greens; fruit and vegetables twice a day, along with their layers pellets. How much fresh greens and veggies is too much per day? I hang fresh greens from the fence for them to jump up and grab, to keep them busy during the day, also.

I really enjoy growing the sprouts and supplying the greens, since they are kept in a run (size is about 20'X15'), rather than free-ranging them. I have feral cats and mongoose to worry about with them.

I don't want to over do it. They get 2 cups of layers pellets and about 5 cups of fresh split into 2 meals per day.

Since they first started laying they have been giving me 5-6 eggs per day, and the shells seem to be healthy, along with the eggs themselves.

Mahalo for any information you can give to me.

The best way to feed chickens is the "free feeding technique"....in other words, leave the food out all day for them to decide when they need to eat. If you restrict them as you are, the shier birds may not get enough to eat.

As for greens or any other treats, they should only occupy about 10% of the total diet. Basically once a day and what ever they will clean up in 15 mins.

Make yourself at home here and we do welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined us!

X2 on Two Crows' advice. It is generally best to feed chickens free choice. They are then able to eat what they need, with less work for their caretaker.

I feed the greens 2 x's per day but the layers pellets are hanging and available all day for them. They do finish the greens and fruit/vegetable plates in about 15 mins.2 x's per day. I will start making it once per day for them. Thanks all!!
