glad it's not just our girls. don't plan to put in lights. at the rate of 2 or 3 a day, that's a dozen or a bit more a week which will do unless we have any big baking needs. our neighbors and my occasional egg customer won't be getting any eggs anytime soon, however.....
I've got my 9 Isa's, 3 White Leghorns, & 2 SLW's still doing pretty well. I have 3 Marans, 6 Barred Rock, & 6 EE's Pullets who when I purchased them was told that they are starting to lay. 3 eggs from 1 Barred Rock in 4 weeks. C'mon you slackers.
We are only getting a few eggs a day, production dropped off here about two weeks ago. I never add lights though, I still get enough eggs in the winter for us, just won't have many to share or sell. Over the years in our area I've noticed they will slow down on laying from around the first of November until around mid February. Natures way of giving them a break I guess. If we really needed the eggs and only had a few hens I might run a light on a timer though, so I'm not knocking those who do.
29 ladies- one is a seasonal layer so I don't expect any eggs from her, 5 hens in full molt, 8 pullets not yet laying, and 1 broody so that means I should be getting about 14 eggs per day and I got 13 eggs this morning. Not too shabby. Looks like my flock management system is working. I think if I used some supplemental lighting I could get the pullets that are not yet laying to give up the goods, but I am not prepared to use lighting in my coop. No power out there and no easy way to get any.
