How much meat does your family consume?

For me, it's not a meal if there's not meat.
I do veggies just fine, but I can't handle a whole lot of starches (rice, grain, pasta, bread, etc.)
so if I am to get full, I have to eat meat.

We raw feed our dogs and buy their food in with ours so it makes it hard to tell how much us humans eat.
Last time I went to Sam's club I got 30lbs of pork and 20lbs of hamburger. It's been less than a month and I need to go again. So at a rate of 50+lbs per month we cold EASILY go through 600+ pounds of meat a year. wow.
We have a freezer so I should really look into buying whole cows or somethin.....I just never can seem to have that much money at one time.

As a guestimation being the primary cook in the household.........

250 lbs Chicken /breast/quarters/whole/hotdogs
75 lbs beef between hamburger/steak/hotdogs
30 lbs pork between bacon/hotdogs/ham

This is a yearly average...... and a rather high one considering there are 9 of us in the household. I never considered it till this thread but looked at our average monthly grocery bill.

Now if you consider eggs in the meat group............ 11,000,000 pounds a year................................................

ok not really but I lurves my eggs.

WOW BOYD that sounds like a LOT of eggs... I am learning to eat more of them in place of meat in our new meal plans... animal proteins without the slaughter... PERFECT substitute.

I hear you Tala.. gotta have some meat to make it feel like dinner. Last week our vegan meal was spaghetti... it was great.. but it just didn't seem right. I'll have to pick something else to be the meatless meal.. like an egg dinner

I just noticed that you are in the Smoky Mountains! Anywhere at all near Summertown? I attended a midwifery conference there a couple years ago on the "The Farm" and just fell down deep in love with that "neck of the woods"....

....all i eate is meat and occasional spinach but if i order a hamburger from mcdonalds or something i scrape off everything but kecthup mustard and pickles no lettuce or onions for me so id say alot of meat just for me

600lbs beef
150lbs pork
100lbs chicken
150lbs turkey

We don't do seafood. We will occasionally eat fish if we caught it off of the lake.

Well that totally makes that easy for you then! I hope it does not offend you that WE do eat meat... I thought about it before I posted... would I offend vegans... it is not my intention to do so.

Nah, I don't get offended. I am very much against the consumption of meat in general, but I feel like holding it against individuals would just be counterproductive, seeing as the vast majority of people do eat meat, including extended family and friends of mine. If I got offended every time people eat meat or talk about eating meat or a mention of meat at all comes up...well, I'd just be a wreck and never get anything done.

Weekly...

2 lbs beef so 100lbs
1 chicken so 52 chickens
1 lb pork so 50 lbs

Add in:
60 quail
5 ducks
5 turkeys
2 geese

Right now about 50% of our food is grown on site, mostly as fruit, veggies, eggs & quail meat, the chickens are grown at my grandparents, 15 minutes away.

I'm a vegetarian, so ... none. My parents and brother and extended family that are over basically every night eat meat most nights... Yuck. Lol.

Our diet is mostly meat. The veggies and fruits that we do eat come primarily from my garden. Right now about the only 'veggie' we're eating is winter squash.

We go through more venison than anything else. My boyfriend and I ate seven deer last year and this year we were only able to put six in the freezers.
We buy maybe 150lbs of beef per year (my BF eats a lot in the form of BK double whoppers). I do eat a lot of chicken, maybe 150lbs a year? That's a tough one because I share a lot of the chicken with my dog. We buy some pork too... mostly in the form of bacon. We probably eat about 50lbs of bacon per year. Plus a few hams and several pork butts per year.

We catch (shoot actually) lots of fish during the Spring and early summer for the freezer too. Mostly bighead carp, silver carp, buffalo fish and gar.
So, it's quite a bit.

On the other hand, a bag of sugar, corn meal or regular flour would last me at least a decade.
