How much protein is too much...can chicks and layers share feed?

I'm trying to avoid buying two types of feed. One for 6wk old chicks and one for layers. I've been using a non medicated grower that is 18% or 20% protein and supplementing layers with oyster shell. Seems to be working fine; no reduction in egg production. Is this healthy for the birds?

Also, my husband just bought 24% starter by accident. Can I feed this to my layers until the next bag or should I return it?

Thanks for the help!

I feed all my chickens, ducks and goose young and old Purina Flock raiser, it's formulated for all stages of life. and just put out Oyster shell for the layers. I've never had a problem in the 7 years I've used it.

Thanks for your input. I looked at that feed yesterday and couldn't decide what to do.

Think I'll try that next time.

Do you think 24% protein is too much for the layers?, just for about one month, that's how long the bag I bought should last.
