How much "scratch" should I feed my chickens?

I would not discount the knowledge of the help and advice that you get from the people on this site just because they/we don't have a PhD....

I agree, but you have to admit there is a lot of incorrect information being given on here.

Something of interest to me is that with free-range birds, if all provided food is scratch, then ranging habits change big time. I have been playing with this for a while and it appears that within limits, the birds can compensate for diets that are too high or too low in protein. In most instances it appears grub they can get on their own is on high protein side except when grasses are growing well as in early spring and when grass seed nearly ripens. At those times my birds often do not clean up all scratch offered.
