How much should I ask for this Red Jungle Fowl Rooster? photo attached

Your bird looks a lot like my "red jungle fowl".

Main sicle feathers relativey straight, earlobes white and legs dark slate blue.

Mine appear to have a little Old English Game in their background but they are mostly red jungle fowl with physical abilites well outside those of any domesticated breed. Some of mine have green legs and size variation is high.

I would value such a bird at about $50. Likely not pure but purity not relavent for conservation interest or show purposes.

Unless you know its from Red Jungle Fowl...i would not sell as one.

Brown Leghorns and Lots of Gamecocks have that look.....more likely one of those , not that many Red Jungle out there.

Its more likely a game, if i remember right brown leghorn have yellow legs.

If game would make a great protecter for your hens.

The vendor of such a bird provided as red jungle fowl is also to be taken at value of the persons word, just like that for those with games. That is unless DNA is examined. A hole or two exist with that (DNA) process as well. What is geographic location of wild source. This can fudge results if not known.

If you are familiar with flying abilities of either American or Old English games, then pushing into flight the bird in question will be evidense for or against a predominance of red jungle fowl in background. Red jungle fowl and backcrosses into it fly much better than any game bred lineage.

A predominantly red jungle fowl will have a crow that approximates that of an Old English Game Bantam.

Size being just a little larger than bantam is also evidence of some red jungle fowl influence.

I have seen parties that advertise the possesion of pure red jungle fowl. Without thorough genetic testing and knowledge of source population, such assertions are weak at best.

If it looks, smells, sounds and feels like one and both parties agree, then it can be treated as red jungle fowl for purposes of trade (not for purposes of research or conservation). This is arrangement that exist for all poultry breeds to my knowledge.

Arianna, it is your responsibility to relay to potential purchaser that the bird only appears to be red jungle fowl. Knowledge of source unknown and even it were, purity has not been verified.

I doubt if any end user of bird has requirements for pure red jungle fowl.

You make some good points.........I do raise Game chicken....not Jungle fowl. I was going by the OP post they were going by their bird looked like a pic of a jungle fowl....not from back ground of the bird itself. I have seen red jungle fowl in person.

No No NOOOOOO!!!!!

He is the prettiest roo ever!!!!! He was in that online Mr 2010 competition and he got my vote!!!!!! He is so pretty, I would have him spur me any day, all day! My roo spurs me all the time and I've gotten used to it. I don't encourage it, but I don't mind it either. I prefer my roo to be a fighter to be able to protect my girls against our dogs and cat. He does a very good job of it too. EVERYONE is careful of him around here. He even attacked a burglar who entered my property!!!!! Good boy!

I have raised game chickens for much of my life and now have limited experience with red jungle fowl. American / Old English Games come closest to what what my "red jungle fowl" look and behave like but even though the jungles may not be pure, are easy to distinguish from any games I have seen. When side by side, jungles run smaller and flight pattern extremely different. Although difficult to describe, sound quality also very different. Feather coloration, whe yuo look at individuals also different. I may try to post that difference later.

Thank you for your post. I do not have his breeding history and I'll make sure any potential buyer will be fully aware of that. He is a very beautiful bird and I will ask $35 for it on Craiglist for anyone who just wants a pretty rooster. I just learn that a pure breed sells anywhere between $100-$700.

Yes I know what they look like...slim , smaller than game chicken. Just don't understand how you can tell just by the pic.

Did the OP buy this as a red jungle fowl....or are they guessing by pics on the net. I had red Stag that looked like that bird.
