How much should I pay for silkie chicks?

I can sell my mutt started 7 week old pulllets for $10-$15 at this time of year and probabbly more come spring. I can also sell 5 month old ready to lay pullets for $25 in the spring. Its all about doing the work that others don't want to do...ie. raising chicks under a lamp, waiting for them to be able to go outside, then waiting for them to lay. Lots of folks don't want to deal with that.

thanks! I will pay it then. The Rhode island reds, blacks, and Americanas I just bought were 1.50/chick, so you can see where 6 bucks frightened me a bit. When I think about it, tho, I really do want them, and 6 bucks for a pet isn't that bad.

As with anything they are worth what someone will pay for them. I got some Araucanas (yes they are actually rumpless, and one is tufted Araucanas) from a lady on CL who was giving them away because they weren't up to snuff for her show birds. They were 3 months old and she was giving them away for free I offered her her five bucks a piece anyway (and felt like I was getting a steal) I think ones comb is wrong but they are beautiful and I enjoy them. It was a bargain for me. When I go outside and feed my chickens I don't notice the ways that they don't meet the standards of perfection. My friends don't sigh in dismay at how imperfect they are when I torture them with pictures and funny stories about them. On the other hand I have sold six week old hatchery ee and sex lings for $7.50 a piece. Not everyone needs to own chickens that are textbook perfect. Not everyone is going to be a breeder or go to shows. If you see a chicken and it makes you smile buy it if you have the money. Even if you are running a business or showing them, buying a six dollar pet silkie, even if it is the most imperfect silkie in the world, won't ruin your life.

This is a good thread...I want to get maybe 3-4 silkie pullets and a Rooster...to keep in the yard and have other hens in the barn area... there was a website I seen a day or so ago...a lady in Oklahoma breeds silkies and she had a rooster on there as well free to a good home.. I can't find it now

Anyway I hope to see more pics on this forum of peoples silkies!

I had some offered to me after I posted an add on CL. The youngest she had were 2 weeks old at $6/chick. is this too much?? I've never bought any silkie chicks before, maybe they're just more expensive? (just plain white, not for showing- just pets)

I don't think their expensive either because they are exotic chicks for only $6.00,wow.

You can buy silkies for $2 at Tractor Supply and they are about a couple days old
Yes, you and purchase your newborn chicks for $2 or so at Tractor Supply. But if you live where the weather is cold to cool you will have to keep them inside until the weather settles. They need to be kept at 95 degrees for the first week and you can drop that in increments of 5 degrees each week. You need to feed them chick starter for their first few months, and then change them to layer food, mark your calendar. During their time indoors, you need to feed and water them, keep their broader clean, deal with the large amount of "dust" they produce, and sometimes just put up with their noise. You also run the risk of the small baby dying. That would not be so great for your children to deal with. When you purchase them from a local chicken farmer, this has all been done for you. Is all of that work and time and peace of mind worth $6 to $8 more. To me, you are getting a bargain.
When you purchase them from a "chicken man", all of this has been done for you. Is that worth the $5 to $8 more.
