How much water

thanks for all replies guys, i was working all day thats why i didn't answer anything till now sounds like i should keep the nipple waterer in with the other dish as a back up, come winter i can but a small water heater in both

I do have auto waterers outside the coops but the younger birds do drink a lot but it's been in the 90's here. I have these in their pens. It holds 6.5 gallons of water. They also make a 3.5 gallon waterer.

I use this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CLDZ5OA/?tag=backy-20
We have it set on a couple of bricks as well. We have a hard time keeping the trough clean though. We also have a small dog bowl on some bricks that we have been putting pedialyte in and we put ice in both as well as a small litter box that was originally for sand, that they never used, but we have repurposed as a wading pool that they now use and we put ice in that as well. Of course they poop and drink out of all three as well as kick dirt into. UGH

just wondering how much water chickens should drink per day, I have 12 birds and am using a 5 gallon pail with 5 horizontal nipples near the bottom of it, it takes a week for them to go thru the 5 gal. I’ve read that the normal is .5 of a litre, that would equal 6 litres per day but I am not going near that much, what are the thoughts out there on this ?

You know, i could not get my flock to use that darn bucket with nipples thing.
I got tired of filling the 2 regular old water dispensers once or twice a day though, and went and bought a 50 gallon water trough, linedit with mesh concaved down to the middle bottom, and sunk it upper lip deep into the ground, and the flock loves it. I still use the old waterers, but just have to flush them out and refill them every 3 days or so. And top off the horse trough about the same, every 3 days or so.

They can never have too much water -just be sure its changed daily if wild birds can get to it. I have wild birds, squirrels & numerous wild animals who drink at night so I change it each morning plus keep it in multiple free range locations. They always go for open containers and typically will drink rainwater first, so keep it fresh also. For waterers I add apple cider vinegar to one & electrolytes to another, so they can take their choice, or go to an additive-free location. I don't notice a preference for either one - usually they pick the one nearest.

Test the nipples by pushing up and down on them to see if they are flowing. If your bucket lid is sealed tightly, there is no air flow. That's been my case in the past. I start my new chicks off on a nipple so they are acquainted with it from the beginning.
