How much would you pay for a dog?

Rebekah, PS I LOVE your Rotts and we may have to deal one day

The Trainer I apprenticed with had Rotts and I sooo fell in love with good ones. And the Rott Club in San Diego Totally rocked when we lived there, lots of therapy dogs, carting Rotts etc. Loved em. I just wish their cancer rate was lower

Glad you're there for the breed. Cher

We have/had 4 dogs. Our first we found on the side of the road when she was about 6 mths old. She passed away last year at the age of 15. Our next 2 are 2 yrs old now and were both adopted from the local animal control. One was $60 with a $20 rebate with proof of spay and the other was $20 (my fil "adopted" him so he was free because he was adopted by a senior citizen) with a $20 rebate with proof of neuter. They were both about 8 weeks old. One was a black lab mix and the other a Golden retriever/GSD mix. Both are awesome kid dogs and great dogs in general. After our old girl passed we began to keep our eyes open for another "inside" dog - under 35lbs, short hair, good with kids, etc. - and finally found our Jack at the Animal control. He was $70 including shots, neuter and micro chip. He is a 3 yr old beagle mix and is just a ham ball. LOVES the kids (toddler to older) and sleeps on dd's bed every night

Considering her is 3 yrs old I think we got lucky. We did take our other 2 dogs to meet him before we decided. He also loves cats and runs right past the chickens LOL!
I will add to that we bought a cat a couple of years ago. He was at my vets office and I paid $100 for him. He was 7 wks old and his "fee" covered his neuter, ALL shots for the 1st year and flea preventative. Pretty good deal.... He is also a goof ball and thinks he should have been a black cat instead of white since he is always rolling in the black dirt here

There are some rescues I would like to adopt from, but the cost is sky-high. I understand that they need money to run their rescue and to help the animals and that's great that there are some people who can afford it, but for me to spend $400 on a rescue without the guarantee of background and testing that good breeders do is too much. If I am going to spend more than $200 on a dog, I will be buying from a reputable breeder so that I have a greater chance of getting a healthy, well-mannered dog. I will gladly part with up to $1200 for a well-bred dog, but for a rescue or shelter dog, I won't go above $200.

I have had dogs all of my life....many I got for free or under $100. I once paid $300 for a westie. The most I have ever paid for a dog was $500 for a Bouvier Des Flandres. And I would again for that breed if I had the money! Of course the woman worked it out with me, two payments of $250.
I dont THINK I would ever pay more than that and most likely much less.

Depends on his skill level... He could be free or worth his wieght in gold

A friend of mine was just quoted $2800 for a female mini bull terrier puppy imported from Germany. I about fainted! I saw the photos, beautiful pup at 12 weeks of age but OMG, is the puppy worth that?

The most I ever paid for a puppy was $800 (Rhodesian Ridgeback). The most I ever paid for a DOG is $2,000 for my oldest border collie. She was a trained sheepdog who you could throw out on any enormous field with any sheep and she'd go get 'em and put them wherever you wanted them. She was whistle trained, voice trained and just KNEW sheep. She could even herd lambs. horrible at sheepdog trialing because she wouldn't do something if it didn't make sense, but you wouldn't find a better farm dog. She's now retired and living in luxury being spoiled by my elderly parents. Best $2,000 I ever spent!!

It all depends on how rare, how talented the dog/parents/siblings have been, etc. I usually research the average price for that breed, find some bloodlines I like and then pick a number I'm willing to live with. I've got a border collie/australian shepherd mix right now that I got for free who is my freestyle disc dog. She's winning like crazy and I didn't spend a dime on her, I just saw the natural ability and trained her. I could sell her for a lot right now (but never would!!)

i have two pit bulls from the same breeder. my male ( who had an underbite and we neutered) cost us nothing, noone had 'picked' him at 14 weeks so we offered to take him home free.

my grump WOULD have cost us 1100 but she was also being a horrible food hog(litter of 14) so at the breeder and OUR vet's advice we took her home and bottle fed her so we paid 600 for her.

My lab was 750.00 and was MOST DEF a puppy mill dog tho we got her from an "agent of the breeder" who at 16 i did not realize was a glorified puppy mill broker.yay for joint pain at 3 years old!

my doberman mix was 150 from a crackhead who was feeding him cornflakes at 10 weeks... best 150 spent because he's thriving.

bottom line... i'd prob spend under a grand on a SERIOUS am staff show prospect... and maybe spend a few hundred on getting a pup out of my girl. . . and if my grump doesnt make it in the ring i'll just not breed her...

before the flames ( which would derail the thread) my dog is OFA checked ect.

Guess I'm the oddball,my older lab(6) out of a NFC,FC was 5k at 8 weeks,that was 6 years ago
