How much would you pay for a dog?

Are all dogs at the shelter $400? That seems too high. Our shelter, and others in the area, assign cost based on adoptability. So the dogs everyone wants pay for the dogs that are hard to adopt (large breed, old, black dogs, undesirable breeds etc). So a small breed puppy would be $400, but the old black lab or pit bull would be $75.

Try local rescues. Price will vary. And remember that already having shots, microchip, sterilization, etc all saves you money.

At most we would pay $300, and that is for a wolfhound rescue. Maybe we would pay more for a livestock guardian one day, but I am not there yet. Of course I don't have a pasture of pricey fiber animals either.
I am a rescue person and I am not crazy about puppies. I mean, I love puppies, but if I wanted another baby, I would have another human one.
Any other dog we would pay under $100 to get. Morgan, our current dog, was a shelter rescue. She was at a no kill shelter and had been there 2 YEARS!! We went in looking for a black lab and when all the candidates were just too crazy for us we asked for the best most patient family dog in the house. The rescue worker said, I have two really great dogs, but you aren't gonna like it, they are both pitbulls. We asked which one had been there longer and she brought us a white and tan pit bull mix. We met and were hooked. She has the best disposition, is fantastic with our kids and cat, and is the most well behaved dog I have ever had in my life. And conveniently she was free. We adopted her in September which is national adopt a pet month so they waived her $50 fee. She was already obedience trained, fixed, and up to date with shots. All the freebees were nice but I would have paid $1000 for her if I had known how special she is. She is terrible with the ducks chasing and wanting to eat them, her prey drive is pretty high, but we are working on it and she is making serious progress.

I think a dog is worth whatever you are willing to pay. If you wanna spend $2000 on the perfect fit dog for you and you think it is worth it, to you, it totally is.

I am in shock at the high prices y'all are quoting for shelter adoptions. Our closest shelter charges $40 for dogs and puppies, $30 for cats and kittens. Less for the "pet of the week". It doesn't matter if one of them is considered more adoptable than others. I paid $30 for KiKi and she is a young, full-blooded siamese. That includes shots, wormings and spay/neuter.
I paid $35 for Charlie Girl (irish wolfhound mix) back in 2000, from a high turnover shelter in NC.

Oh, I'm not doubting y'all; just shocked is all. KiKi came with all that is listed there except for collar & tag, microchip and pet insurance. They offered me a cardboard carrier, but I had brought my own.
ETA: She did come with her rabies tag, which can be used to trace her ownership should she ever get lost, but she's indoors only.

I'm also shocked, last I checked on shelter animals was back in San Diego and it was HIGH there! Almost cheaper to go buy a puppy!

I'm not sure how much it is here in Nebraska, but I do know they don't spay/neuter the animals - they give you a coupon here for a % off at certain vet clinics.

Our registered English Bulldog was $2,000

She's the dumbest dog I've ever met

We also have a pit/lab mix that just showed up one day. She's the best dog we've ever owned

If your going to pay high dollar for a dog, do your research! Check out all of the possible problems/surgeries that are common for the breed your looking at. We ended up spending another $800 on our E Bulldog because she needed to have plastic surgery on her eyes

It's wise to have a savings account for your pets too
