Crowing
They will crow. Period. It is lessened slightly if the extra males are kept far from the females, so that they won't know they exist. They'll still crowl

Ammonia
You have two options that I've found work OK. Pine pellet bedding for solid bottom cages is one option. If it gets warm (summer in a garage) then there is an odor. If it gets wet, then it smells sour.

Another option is wire bottom cages with trays scraped daily. This works out fairly well. You'll want them in a DRY location though, where it is not too WARM.

Potash works better than lyme, but not everyone has it all year long!

Oops! Yes, nothing shuts up a crowing coturnix roo, other than assignment to camp Kenmore, for extreme cold weather training!

I love them, but they are not "QUITE", by any stretch of the imagination!

^ good advice.

they crow about as often as you don't want them too.

I put them lower on the "smelly scale" than pet mice and guinea pigs (imho). but if someone new walks in your house and you have not changed litter in 3+ days, noses will wrinkle.

will try the pine pellets, we use pine shavings with a solid floor changed frequently. we also put a light sprinkle of pine shavings on the pans for the wire bottom trays. cedar shavings not recommended.

we do have them on wire outside.

I use "Barn Lime" from TSC, approx $2.99 for 50 lbs. I have 40 Rabbits and 200 Quail, spread over droppings and in my case ( Rabbits ) where the urine is and it will eliminate 95% or more of the odor, it even seems to keep down the flies a little. You don't need much just a dusting to lightly cover the area.

2-3 hens does NOT usually satisfy a roo...not MY roos anyway.5-7 hens do though and as long as they are with that # mine rarely if ever seem to crow ...

@quuailmale ...can i use garden lime for the smell or does it have to be barn lime...is there a difference?

Barn lime says right on bag to be used around animals and in Barns, it's kinda grainy textured, the "other" lime is powdery and is for putting on the ground for your gardens and such to change the ph. I put it (other lime) in a hog pen many years ago without knowing the differance and it burned their bellies from laying in it. Read the bag for the info.
