The hanger hook, with hot soapy water should do it. If you can't take apart the under-sink 'U' pipe, then you could also find a 'plumber's snake' at your local hardware store to clear it. I've not used it on plants, but it worked wonders on the pine shavings and potting soil. Ahem. Yes, I have a child, why do you ask?
