How not to heat your coop

I nearly didn't go out to my coop this morning. Some busy busy mornings, I get out there late and I was running late this am.. but this nagging feeling made me go make sure they had enough food. It's so cold and I didn't want them to run out of food and get all stressed out.. good thing I did.. Had I left it until this afternoon, well.. who knows..

Well , it's a good lesson learned by all of us. Thank God no one was hurt. I worry about that too. I now secure the lamp with twine or something so it cannot fall or be pushed around. AND I added a smoke alarm. 10 bucks well spent

I saw those smoke alarms when grabbing another humidity gauge and thought about it. My lamp is hung by 2 rock climbing slings (~800lb breaking point) at a height that if it does swing or turn it comes into contact with one of the metal braces on the corner instead of the wood. Not too concerned about that but I am concerned about the fact I'm running extensions cords 300' to a surge protector and then to a heat lamp and heated water bucket. I have the whole thing taped up to avoid chicken droppings or bedding getting in any connections but the surge protector has tripped before. Soon as it's warm enough I'm doing some real wiring to my coop instead.

Ok I"m going out now to put added wire through those holes that hold up the lamp to the ceiling! YIKES, never though of it falling! Thanks for the heads up! I have TWO going in by the hens at all times. The way the hens jump around it could very well happen to me too!
