How Often Should I Clean My Coop?

How do you clean it? I usually rake out the bedding and put it in our compost and then hose down the coop.

Hose?

I'm an new to chickens, mine aren't even here yet but my coop has a wooden floor. I'm worried about urine eventually soaking in the wood, I wouldn't even think about hosing it down. What kind of floor or coop do you have?

I clean mine out twice a year. I shovel it out with a old coal shovel. Sometimes, depending on how energetic I feel, I'll take a broom in there and dust it out. I've never sprayed a hose in there, or even bother with mopping it out. In between cleanings, I'll dump a fresh bag of pine shavings in there as the old shavings/bedding breaks down. I don't have any crap board to scrap, but I'll either turn the bedding under the roosts, or throw a few handfuls of scratch under there and let the birds turn it, as needed.

Chickens don't urinate. ...:)

Spring and fall. I have a wire mesh floor under their roosting area. And the coop is only used for sleeping and laying eggs.

I clean when I think the ammonia is building up.

I clean if I have any mite or lice issues. Treating the birds and the bedding both. To prevent mites it is important to keep rodent and wild bird populations out of the coop.

I clean when it my wife makes a comment.

I clean if my grandchildren are coming out to "play" with the chickens.

I think how often depends on how many sq feet per chciken. If you can find the mini flake pine bedding I find it lasts much longer than the larger pine chip bedding and is much easier to rake.

I clean my poop boards every morning.when I feed and water.then I scoop up poop in their runs.i clean out my coop in the spring and than in the fall.with the poop board underneath the roost.it catches all their night droppings.which is a lot.i do add fresh shavings as needed.and I will say my coop does not smell.do a poop board underneath your roost.and it is easy peasy.
