Hi heat lamps ARE VERY VERY HOT ! even the smallest amount of dust which they DO produce a HUGE amount of (as you will soon see) can ignite VERY quickly. Those of us who have seen coop fires (usually started from a HEAT LAMP OR HEATER) Can tell you that it is a pitiful site! chickens play and as they grow get a lot more rambunctious and can EASILY knock a heat lamp into bedding and POOF that fast you have fire. if you don't like the "mamma cave" system consider a radiant heat brooder. They are VERY INEXPENSIVE TO RUN compared to a heat lamp and because it's radiant heat there is NO CHANCE OF FIRE. The chicks huddle under it and it can be raised or lowered to accommodate growing chicks. I just got one for myself after wanting one for YEARS! Right now wayfair online has a sale on the one I got called Brinsea Ecoglow 20 Chick Brooder. They are usually priced over a hundred dollars but now the 20 chick is 10% off at 85 dollars. They have a 20 and 50 chick size. Please look it up online to read about it. it's very economical in the long run and VERY SAFE. it can't burn skin or anything around it. again it's called Brinsea Ecoglow 20.it's WELL WORTH the money. it has a very long plug in and Can be used safely in the coop. I really hope this helps. if you don't take anything away with what I've said please remember this very important warning , heat lamps are extremely dangerous to use in your coop. just don't do it. I really hope this helps.
