How old is my duck?

I'd guess less than a week old.

I'd recommend either returning him to where you found him so that he can be reunited with his family, or turning him in to a wildlife rescue. Generally taking a wild bird/animal is illegal for a variety of reasons.

Getting him a domestic companion is not the best solution long term as a wild duck will ultimately migrate when the time comes and his beloved domestic companion will not be able to fly off with him. He needs to be homed with a flock of other wild ducks eventually.

Thanks so much for your input! We searched for mom and rest of ducklings and couldn’t find them, so that’s when we decided to pick him up. We would’ve never taken him if mom was around! Wildlife rescue seems to be the best option for him! Thanks a bunch!

If you are in the US it is illegal for you to keep it unless you have the proper permits. It's a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Taking it to a wildlife rescue is really your only legal option so I'm glad you'll be looking for one.

Will do! Thanks so much for your knowledge and input!

It's a shame he's lost his mama! Who knows, maybe wildlife rescue would set you up with a few other ducklings his age and you'll be in charge of caring for more until they are ready to be on their own!

That would be quite the experience! Thanks for the reply! :)
