"Too old" is my official response. I pestered my parents for years to get a dog. They got me goldfish, a hamster, a parakeet... and then AFTER I moved out to college, they started getting dogs.

I didn't actually get one until the day after my honeymoon.

Haha, my parents were almost the exact same way. My siblings and I wanted a dog. My parents didn't exactly seem against it. My mom said she wished there were a dog home, especially while my dad was working his 24 hour shifts and mentioned a little beagle may be a good idea. My dad loved dogs, he always had a lot if good stories about his dogs, especially a chesapeake bay retriever that had a diamond pattern on his chest named Ace. My sister found a stray kitten that she cried and cried to keep. The cat lived 14 years. My oldest child got to meet that cat lol. So, a dog never officially happened. My mom said after the cat died, no more pets, but after our cat passed away all of us kids had already moved out. She couldn't help herself and got another kitten =P.

Growing up we had fish, hissing cockroaches, and then a hamster before the cat came along.

My first dog was a beagle named Rex and I got him as a toddler. Mom would give me left over cornbread and him and I would sit out in the yard and enjoy it together. In my lifetime I have had many other dogs and I hope they are all waiting for me on the other side.

There is just this thing about beagles - they are so cute! They seem like amazing dogs! Sounds like good memories =)

Good thread! I think I was about 3. Dad got a dog when Mom and us kids were out of town visiting her relatives. It was a mystery where he got him as well as what he was, Dad never would tell a straight story about him. I eventually did some research and concluded he was a Kooikerhondje, I think is how it's spelled, a Dutch duck trolling dog. He was a pretty cool dog and we had him about 13 years. I've pretty much never been without a dog since. I now have Shelties, about the closest I can come to that dog.

ETA: Dad said he was a Cocker- German shepherd mix, but he got him from a Dutch friend of his and had already named him Corky, which is how the beginning of the breed name is pronounced. So go figure.
