Oh, heck no. My wife wanted the son to stay at home and go to the local tech college to get his general ed credits out of the way and then head off to finish at a four year school. I said no way. He ended up going to a University of Wisconsin school about two hours from here. Just far enough away for him to learn some independence and responsibility, but still come home every now and again. He's in his second year there now.
The first few weeks he was in school he called me saying that the college didn't get his transcripts from high school. My response? "What the heck are you calling me for? Handle it." He's catching on...
10 years ago I would have been the same way. With the jobless rate at 17% here, I can't just toss him into the street when he is trying, and fulfilling our demands. He is doing ok too - knows he has to work his butt off here on the weekends and shut up about it.
I agree, Debi. In areas where there are no jobs, you should only kick your kid out if you want them to take up hooking
Heck, I would LOVE to have a couple cleaning jobs - I don't mind cleaning, it's actually pretty therapeutic, but can I find any? Nope. I'm pretty low maintenance.. Very, actually. Can't afford a car and I can't drive so I walk everywhere, Goodwill is my favorite store, I wash my clothes in the tub and hang to dry because I'm not paying almost two dollars for a load of laundry.
So if any of you know young adults that are still living at home (and pulling their weight around the house) - don't look down or degrade them because of it, it's tough out there!
