How safe are the eggs?

Hello, this is my first time on byc, and relatively new to keeping chickens. I have a query about the safety of their eggs...

Since getting the chickens last november, my 3 yr old has contracted food poisoning twice! The test from the lab came back as Campylobacter, commonly associated with raw poultry...I am convinced it came from the chickens and I also now know that children under 5 should not handle the chickens.

I no longer allow my children to play with them but I am concerned about the eggs...will they also contain Campylobacter? And if so, will thorough cooking of the eggs kill any bacteria? My kids love eggs but I dont think we could cope if it happened again lol

I have looked online for info but can only find it regarding Salmonella.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you should never allow children to handle chicks much and especially kiss them. Now I do kiss my older birds. I am not sure if older birds carry the salmonella as the babies do right after hatch. I have never had any troubles, but yes, kissing babies is not good. I think it is just a baby chick thing and is not present in older birds. As long as you cook eggs thoroughly, they are perfectly safe to eat. Just as any other eggs or meat, all of it needs to be cooked completely thru.

Good luck with your babies and enjoy BYC!

Welcome to BYC!

I always wash my eggs off just before I use them. I don't wash them earlier, because I don't want to wash the bloom off. and I always use either hand sanitizer or wash my hands if I've been in the coop. Chickens are dirty :)

Wow! Thank you everyone!
I dont believe that hygiene is the issue, we have always been concious of that and even more so after the first incident of food poisoning.
That link looks interesting, i wonder if anyone can make sense of it though??!! And possibly translate it into simple terms for me... I would just like to know that if a chicken is carrying Campylobacter, can it also be in the eggs that she lays?
I think that i am coming across as simple...but i probably am... ;-) !!

After reading that link it seems the simple answer to your question is no. It is RARELY found in the eggs.
