How small should treat pieces be for 8 week old chicks?

I have been giving watermelon as treats to them, but not sure if it's necessary to cut in small pieces for them to be safe? Should I give to them as a big hunk and let them peck at it. I've been cutting up and then worry it's not small enough. Then second question if I give them blackoil sunflower seeds do they eat them shell and all?

I imagine with melon they will peck it into bite sizes good for them. Mine are 8 weeks old and aren't interested in treats other than scratch yet but I have offered melon just from the rind. Though maybe I am not doing it correctly since mine aren't interested in anything but scratch as a treat... and grass when we let them out in the yard.

I have 5 week old chicks that love watermelon. All I do is cut it in half and throw it in with them. They just peck onto it. They dot at the rind on their own. Now by big chickens will eat it to the skin.

My almost 5.5 wk olds are just showing interest in other food stuff.
Last night the girls got the top off a tomato, they ate half. I have given them lettuce, but
only one liked it. I found some clover in my garden so I gave it to the girls, they went nuts over it.
I will just gave them a little of this and a little of that and enjoy finding out what they like.
