How smart are deer ?

We have 40+ feeding stations in the grounds where we provide rabbit pellets for the rabbits. During Bucky's reign we had no problems with the feeders. Today four of them had been rolled by the deer trying to get at the pellets. There is a fair sized buck in the group. I will not be protecting him or any others of these trouble makers. :rant
