How soon aftre hens getting red combs do they start laying eggs...

My chickens are about 15 1/2 weeks old. I have a few hens that have had very red combs for over a week now, some of the hens still have very pale combs. How long from when the combs start getting really red do they start laying?? Coinicidently , the hens with the really red combs are the ones that are escaping the run and free ranging in the horse paddock and bushes. Should I be checking for nests and eggs in there?

Their combs begin to turn red about a month before laying. Good luck!
