How soon do the males start crowing?

I have a new group of eight Coturnix quail. I know I have at least two males, by way of feather sexing, but there may be more.They are about 5 1/2 weeks old.

I have one adult male already, and I've heard him crow before, but he's been fairly quiet over the last couple of months. I've noticed a lot more crowing in the last day or two, and was curious if the new males may be cranking up, unless the old guy decided he wants to make some noise.

The adult is on the ground, inside a coop, where the others are in a hutch, within the same coop. So, they are together, but separated.

Sounds like I need a Blink camera on them so I can identify the culprits. Ha.

They usually start crowing anywhere from 4-8 weeks, depending on the season.

Occasionally you get one that starts earlier.

I have seven more in the brooder. Statistically speaking (male to female ratio), is there any reason not to cull one of the 5.5wk old known males now, or perhaps this weekend?

I'm not chomping at the bits to start dispatching birds all willy nilly, but if I know I already have two males, in a group of eight, getting shod of one isn't a bad thing, is it?

Not at all. Since the hatch rate is usually 50/50 and you know that you have another male, it shouldn't be a problem.

Coming up on 7wks, and unless I have a "late bloomer," I'm going to say I had three males and five females.

I gave two of the males to a coworker, so (hopefully) I have the somewhat ideal ratio of 1:5 remaining.

5 females to 3 males is pretty nice! Pretty cool you ended up with the "perfect" ratio by chance haha!

I have seven more birds. They will be four weeks this Saturday.

I've identified one male (I think) through feather sexing. The remainder will need to be either vent sexed, or crow sexed. Ha!

Fingers crossed for a similar ending ratio.

I hatched out seven more, overnight and this morning, but I'm gifting them to a coworker. So I'm not terribly worried about those. I don't think he is either. He just wants some for the experience.

I hope to put 12 more eggs in the cooking machine Friday.
