How soon does a Hen lay eggs when she still has chicks?

Hi, My name is Tammy and I have a hen and 7 week old chicks. I am wondering how soon does a hen lay eggs after she has hatched chicks?

In my experience, with my bantams, usually 2-3 weeks after she has 'cut the cord' on the babies and no longer raising them.

Having said that, I have also had youngsters hanging in the coop, watching mumma hen lay her egg

I think it sometimes depends on the hen.

Hi Tammy, some broody mamas kick the kids to the curb early and go about their lives. Others don't want to cut the cord, usually silkies. They are very motherly.

Depends on the hen! Had a game hen that would lay while her brood surrounded her. By the time they were 6- 8 weeks old the new babies would be hatched. She was a good layer, very fertile, and an excellent mother.
