How tall does a run have to be to keep chickens in

Mine are in runs that are covered, but often get to range in very large backyard during day. The fence around our yard is only 4 feet tall, and I have yet to have problems with any going over fence(knock on wood), however they have gone under fence once or twice

Same here, except the only ones that make through are the banties. My Wyandottes fly like a brick. If my roost were any higher than 30" off the floor, they would sleep on the floor. The BOs are almost as bad, but they're still young and light. The EEs can easily clear six feet, but don't go over the wire, because nobody will follow them. The banties: If the keep practicing they will be flying to Mexico next winter.

Okay I have one section 24x12 that is 6ft high. This now has wire and tarps covering it. And this attached to a 40x40 that is 4ft high this is covered with chicken wire. I would never recommend not having a roof over your run. And if your run is small enough and you plan on waking in it yourself I would suggest you put a solid roof, metal, ect over it. This will cut down on the mud and snow that you will have to deal with. I know when we move in the summer the 6 ft high section of the run will have a solid metal and plexi roof.

ok so say I want to remove to "roof" on the run in the fall when I switch runs what material is the easiest to remove. Would a type of netting be a good roof. I don't really want a solid roof cause I want the birds to be able to enjoy the sun while it lasts. The summers a sort and sweet.
