I have been looking at coops for awhile now. I have narrowed it down to 4x5 for 4-5 hens. The only dimension I can not find is how tall should your coop be? Looking for height from floor to roof. Some articles say 3 1/2 feet height. What height is your coop from floor to roof?

For the chickens: 2 feet of height to walk around, then a roost with 1-2 feet above it for their heads, then maybe some extra height so you can have ventilation above their heads while they are sleeping. Probably 3 feet of height as a minimum.

For you: tall enough to walk without bumping your head, even when the bedding gets piled up deep.

If it's tall enough for a person to walk into, it is always tall enough for the chickens :)

IMO, 4 feet is the minimum to get a good depth of bedding in the base, to have the nest boxes above the bedding, the roosts above the nest boxes, and the ventilation above th e birds' heads when they're sitting on the roost.

You can see photos of this in my article about The Little Monitor Coop here.

Shed is 12'.
Coop ceiling is 7'.

Being able to get in there easily to clean and examine birds off the roost at night is a very good thing.
Ventilation up as high as possible is very good too, especially if you live in a cold climate.

Here's some tips on heights:
