Found a ginormous egg a few days ago. All I could think of when I first saw it was "OWWWW!!!!

I knew it was a double yolker for sure, but was really surprised to find this:

It seems to have been a soft shell, but I'm confused on the order of how things happened. Was the soft one formed first and just sitting around until the next day when the regular yolks were passing through? Or vice versa?

Anywhoo, this is what I found inside the 'lil one:

It's so cute!

An egg within an egg occurs when the egg is formed and begins to come down the egg canal but somehow reverses and a second egg forms around the first. This one, in your case, happened to be a double yolker. I'm sure this a an extraordinarily rare event. Both the double yolk and the egg w/in an egg are 'mistakes' in the hen's reproductive system. Definitely keep those pics because you had a very rare occurence with an egg w/in a double yolk egg. Pretty cool!

This website explains this and other "egg oddities".

Wow... Some of my girls often lay double yolkers... and 3 days ago I had an egg in a egg.... but not all at once! Very Cool!

I knew it was weird, but I didn't realize it was that unusual! The girls just started laying about three weeks ago and they are our first chickies.
