i would typically take care of any issues with my chickens while they are on the roost, either night or very early morning. yesterday i needed to catch a bird in the heat of the day. i didn't want to run the flock in the heat, but catching him was almost impossible since my run is so big.
does anyone use a particular tactic to catch chickens?
thanks for your input.

i find staying calm not running after them hold out arms walk slowly toward them kind of hurd to a corner bend down and pick up. all with very slow calm moves

or get a hand full of meal worms lure chick to hand rich down and grab :p

sorry, couldn't resist

I use my handy chicken grabber:

Once I've pinned him /her, I'll grab the tail with my free hand and swing him/her under my arm.

I don't mess with them in the heat.

My technique also works best on adult birds, I also use the grab the tail thing. This is especially helpful for chicks that like to run to the farthest place in the brooder, you know far enough to just touch with finger tips, then they turn just right grab the tail feather and pull in.

I pin him down with it or turn him around with it so I can grab his tail. Now he simply sees it and squats so I can pick him up. This is a great herding tool. I guess it's my version of the poultry hook.
