How to catch a coyote!?!?

1 time I caught a dog that was out for a walk/ run with its owner, the dog owner got bit taking his own dog out of the foothold trap, he then pulled my stake and trap and tossed it. He then went and called the DNR and warden met with him and wanted to see the site and trap to make sure it was legal, it was and then the warden proceeded to give the dog owner a fine for tampering with my trap (throwing it in the marsh).

Is electric fencing just too easy? Clearly some people love to hunt but you're trying to solve a problem and this is great way to keep out ALL or most predators not just the problem of the day. Growing up in Alaska hunting was constant for a different reason, so were predators. You start killing everything that threatens your flock and you've got a new job. I have Eagles, Hawks, Mountain Lion, Coyotes, Bob Cat, Racoons, Foxes, Skunks, Owls, Bear.... I mean it just doesn't end at one Coyote....

Leg AND Foot and whatever else.... they're rapidly getting banned in the lower 48. Trap lines for subsistence are just not a thing down here like they were in my home land (from Alaska but now i'm in Oregon where there is a safeway around every corner, laws within laws and you need a permit for everything everywhere.) Just cross trapping off the list of options, it's not 1823 down here.

Hi! Unfortunately electric fencing would not work for me. My house has such horrible electricity! (Seriously I can’t even have two heaters plugged in at the same time) I have the same predators as you but I usually only have a few that cause problems. Coyotes and coons are the only ones that have caused me problems. Occasionally a hawk will come around but will just fly off. I had one stock the chickens one time. It landed in a tree and just sat there for a bit. I shot it a few times with a BB gun (don’t think I’m allowed to kill an hawk) and the thing didn’t even budge! It hasn’t come back for about seven months now so I think he gave up. For me usually shooting one of the predators will keep the rest away. Shot a raccoon last spring and haven’t seen one around since. This is just what works for me. It’s crazy to me how some people just want to “live in peace with all creatures”. In the old days it was shoot the coyote to save the chickens or your family starves. I just don’t understand how people can think like this! I’m not trying to start an argument. To each their own way but people shouldn’t be getting mad at people because they do things differently than you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Electric fencing has solar power option. Don't worry about starting anything, there is no one perfect opinion. I grew up with constant Moose, Caribou, Salmon and Halibut in the freezer. But that was in the last frontier a long time ago. This crowded lower 48 just isn't like it was in the old days, that's the big difference. When I first moved down to it I had idea how many more laws there would be, unreal amount. AND you need a permit to fart. We all choose where we live and it is what it is. I'm way out in no where and still a stray bullet hit a neighbors car not long ago. We're not living in the middle of Yellowstone. Shooting is dangerous and so is trapping. You'd really love Alaska though...

I understand both sides and it isn't straightforward, that's for sure. Nature keeps itself in check until we come in and mess it up. Some of us (like me) like to take responsibility for that and work with the wildlife, predators included, to minimize losses on all sides. How far you're able to take that depends on individual circumstances.

For the people who can't risk losing their livestock, if all they have is a gun, they're going to shoot that coyote (or at least shoot at it) that's going after their livelihood. No, shooting one coyote isn't going to solve the issue. Another will move in eventually, or another predator will, or both. But it stops that one coyote from doing more damage.

The way I see it, they aren't coming onto our property. Animals don't know what property is. Borders and fences mean nothing to them. We live smack dab in the middle of their territory. So what deterrents can we use to keep them away in the first place? Sound? Smell? LGD owners swear up and down by them but not everyone can afford a dog, and that's not something you should do on a whim anyway. Fences can work but $$$ and simply not feasible in all situations... Motion sensor sprinklers work for a time but determined animals may get used to them or learn how to avoid the spray. If you come into contact with a predator you can yell and wave your arms and make loud sounds to scare it away and make it fear humans but that obviously won't work if you're not outside watching. Some people have motion sensor alarms but will that cause noise complaints? There is no one size fits all solution.

Anyone who has ever seen what mange can do to overpopulated coyotes in the winter would view trapping differently since trapping takes probably close to 90% of all coyotes harvested. I just don't get why people would rather have the animal suffer for months with mange than a responsible trapper catching it and harvesting it in less than 1 day.

Hello everyone! So I’ve had a coyote, stocking chickens for a while. Today it came really close, but left before I was able to shoot it. I had to leave today and I was gone for about 30 minutes and then when I got home, I noticed he had killed one of my chickens and attacked another one, but was unsuccessful. I’ve had things kill the chickens before, but usually they’re not brave enough to do it while we’re home or will even come near the house. This coyote has been getting close. Too close. And I know it’ll be back for more. I’m wondering what is the best way to lure in/trap a coyote. I’m sure many of you have dealt with this before. When the poultry comes so do the predators. I’m very upset as this was one of my favorite chickens. Please help me get this thing! I have a rabbit call but so far that hasn’t worked. I cannot build a run for my chickens, so please do not tell me too. I love my chickens, but they are for eggs and I’ve already spent a lot of money building their coop.

Get a roadrunner and get it to chase that into your house.

Update: boy do I have a story! So I went to feed my chicks (which are in my garage) and a herd one of the chickens screaming! Ran out of the garage, grabbed a shotgun (which I had in a good spot because of the resent events). I saw it running away with my chicken and I got it! And I thought the chicken was dead but it dropped it and she ran off! She has a few scratches but she’s alright! So happy I got him!
